Attorney Hired For Woman Who Went Into Premature Labor After Accident
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - An unfortunate chain of events caused a Coca-Cola tractor-trailer to crash into a home off Ives Dairy Road near I-95 earlier this month, sending a pregnant woman inside the home into labor.
Attorney Otto Ospino told CBS4's Brian Andrews that his client, Junaei Morales, gave birth prematurely to a baby boy the night of the accident, May 10th, at Memorial West Hospital.
The attorney explained that the child was released only a few days ago from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and that Morales is too preoccupied with the health of her premature son to focus on anything else at the moment.
According to the official FHP crash report, the driver of a red Mercedes, identified as Laura Marcela Child of Hollywood, is at fault for the accident.
The reports state that Child ran a red light at the intersection of Ives Dairy Road and NE 16 Street and crashed into an on-coming semi loaded with Coca-Cola products. Due to the impact, the soda truck lost control and smashed into the home.
The structural damage of the home was so extensive, the county condemned the property.
Attorney Ospino told CBS4 that he tried several times to reach Coca-Cola to see if there was something they could do for their client who was forced out of their home and with medical bills in result of the accident.
As of Tuesday, Ospino said he hadn't heard from Coca-Cola.
Tuesday night, CBS4 was able to contact Gorki De Los Santos, a spokesman for Coca-Cola.
"Our driver did not run a red light and did not receive a traffic citation," said De Los Santos. "We have not been contacted by the family's attorney."
CBS4 News visited the Hollywood home of Laura Marcela Child. She declined to appear on camera, but said she has an attorney and has obtained surveillance video from the night of the crash.
Child believes that the video will prove that the truck ran the red light, not her.
