Attempted Sexual Assault Ends With Shooting
NORTH MIAMI (CBS4) - North Miami Police are looking for a gunman who shot 28-year-old Diana King outside her apartment building Thursday morning on the 14000 block of NE 18th Avenue.
"This is my daughter, and this is what she gets for going to work and being good? She was attacked like this, this is terrible," said the victim's mother Deborah King. "Something needs to be done. The person who did this will be caught."
King's family told CBS4's Peter D'Oench that Diana was shot in the thigh and arm while the gunman attempted to sexually assault her in the parking lot of her Center Courts apartment building.
North Miami Police said the gunman was described as a short man in his 20's or 30's.
King works at a spa as a clerk, is a mother of a young child, and plans to get married in January. After the shooting, King was able to get into her apartment and dial 911 after the shooting.
Neighbors said there were problems in the building and that it was dangerous.
"I don't like this building; I want to move out, this building is no good no more," said neighbor Mary Michelle Pierre.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue airlifted King to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she is stable after undergoing some surgery, her family said.
The victim's grandmother, Irene King, made an impassioned plea to CBS4's Peter D'Oench while clasping a picture of her great-granddaughter.
"This hurts me; our whole family is torn up," Irene King said. "My granddaughter is a sweet, innocent girl who worked hard every day for her her family and her baby. She never did anybody any harm. If you asked her for help, she'd give it. The gunman had no right to hurt my granddaughter. It would make me very happy to see that person caught or turn himself in."
