Arthur Becomes Category 2 Hurricane With NC Landfall

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Hurricane Arthur's winds were at 100 mph Thursday night making it a category 2 hurricane. It became the first hurricane of this year's season earlier in the day.

The storm approached the coast for a landfall late Thursday night. It made landfall at Shackleford Banks between Cape Lookout and Beaufort. Sustained winds reached 77 mph at the NOAA Cape Lookout station and wind gusts were at 101 mph.

At 11:00 p.m. the center of the storm was located 75 miles west-southwest of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The storm was moving north-northeast at 18 mph.

In the latest advisory, a Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Nantucket Island and for Cape Cod from Provincetown to Chatham.

Environment Canada has issued a tropical storm watch for Nova Scotia from Port Maitland Eastward and Northward to Point Aconi.

A Hurricane Warning remains in effect from Surf City, North Carolina to the North Carolina/Virginia Border, Pamlico Sound and the Eastern Albemarle Sound.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect from Cape Fear to south of Surf City.

A Tropical Storm Warning remains for the North Carolina/Virgina border to Cape Charles Light, Virginia including the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, and Western Albemarle Sound.

Hurricane conditions are expected with portions of the Hurricane Warning area through Thursday night.
