Arrest Made In Weston Burglaries

FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - The third time was definitely not the charm for a would-be burglar in Weston.

Matthew Hamilton is in the Broward jail charged with burglary and loitering.

The Broward Sheriff's Office was called in Monday morning after three residents reported their homes had been broken into.

Detectives believe the first home, at 16946 Royal Poinciana Drive, was burglarized just before 3 a.m. A second home at 582 Spinnaker was broken into just before 5 a.m. There were people sleeping in each of the homes that Hamilton targeted.

Resident Leo Windsor heard a bang just before 5 a.m. and saw someone entering his kitchen.

"The noise didn't scare me but when I saw the silhouette it got to me at that point, " said Windor.

Windsor grabbed a phone on his nightstand, hid in a closet and called 911.

He says the burglar stole jewelry that belonged to his late wife and silver coins.

A third home, just a few doors down at 661 Spinnaker, was hit around 8 a.m. The resident, became aware of the someone else in the house when he heard noises and saw a stranger to the rear of the home.

 

Hamilton had broken a window to get inside and made off with with several electronic devices and some jewelry.

Deputies swept the neighborhood street by street and by air.

They eventually found him hiding in some bushes on Spring Boulevard, just minutes from the 600 block of Spinnaker.

Hamilton has a history of charges relating to burglary and drugs going back to 2009. He was most recently arrested on September 27th for burglary of an occupied dwelling, possession of burglary tools, grand theft, resisting without violence and loitering. He now faces new charges for burglary of an occupied dwelling and loitering.
