Arrest Made In UM Dorm Room Assault
CORAL GABLES (CBSMiami)- A man accused of assaulting several University of Miami students in their dorm room early Sunday morning has been arrested by the Coral Gables Police.
According to a crime alert sent out by UM to all students around 6 a.m., a female student in Mahoney Residential College Dorm woke to find a strange man in her room. Police later identified the man as 21 year-old Jiahao Yuan of China. Coral Gables police said Yuan got in through the unlocked dorm door and inappropriately touched the student while she slept.
Once awakened, the student confronted Yuan, screamed at him and scared him off.
University officials said he ran down the hall and into the first unlocked dorm room he could find. Once inside, Yuan inappropriately touched the female students which caused them to wake up, according to police.
During questioning, Yuan reportedly confessed to entering and touching the students. He was arrested and charged with "Occupied burglary with an assault or battery".
UM officials remind all students to lock their dorm room doors at all times and report any suspicious behavior they see. More importantly, they urged students to never sign in people they don't know into residence halls.
