MIAMI - A man armed with a gun was fatally shot by police Friday morning in Hialeah.

Around 7 a.m., officers were sent to 535 W 53rd Street to check out a report of a violent argument, according to police.

Once there, they encountered an armed man in front of a home. Police said at one point officers were forced to fire, killing the man. They have not released his name.

Neighbor Jose Gonzalez said "I saw a helicopter going back and forth. I don't know what was going on. I have lived here 50 years."

Steadman Stahl, president of the South Florida Police Benevolent Association, said three officers were involved in the incident.

"Some of our officers were dispatched to a domestic with a subject with a firearm. When they arrived, they encountered a very agitated gentleman with a firearm in his hand. He was extremely agitated. The officers gave him numerous, numerous commands to drop the firearm. He did not. He pointed the gun at the police officers and they had no other choice but to take his life," he said.

One neighbor said she's not surprised.

"There was a murder on W 53, in that house, not even a year ago. So this is becoming common," she said.

Police said this was an isolated incident and there was no danger to the public.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting, which is standard practice when law enforcement is involved.
