Archbishop McCarthy High School Principal Arrested Following Domestic Incident
MIRAMAR (CBSMiami) – Police have arrested the principal of a Catholic high school in Miramar.
Richard Jean is charged with battery stemming from an off-campus domestic incident.
The alleged victim, who signed an affidavit requesting personal information not be released, told police Jean grabbed him and threw him to the ground.
From the Miramar police arrest report:
"Upon arrival, contact was made with (VI) who advised he was involved in a physical altercation with (DEF).
"VI advised that he was having a conversation with the DEF who became upset and attacked him… (DEF) grabbed him and threw him to the ground. VI stated that he ran from the residence in fear."
The police report added that the victim showed bruising on his neck and had blood in the right ear.
News of Jean's arrest shocked those at Archbishop McCarthy High School on Tuesday.
"I would have never expected that out of our principal. He has to set an example. To see that happen is kind of crazy," said student Samuel Aguirre.
Others learned through social media channels.
"It is like all over social media. It's going up on the news saying about domestic violence and all that," said Austin McClean.
This is not Jean's first headline-making event. About a year ago an ex-student attacked him. Jean defended himself and the attacker was arrested.
In this domestic disturbance case, Jean has been suspended by the Archdiocese.
CBS4 News reached out to the Archdiocese of Miami and received the following statement:
"The Archdiocese of Miami learned today that Mr. Richard Pierre Jean, Principal at Archbishop McCarthy High School, was arrested. He has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the Miramar Police Department's investigation. Details of the arrest are vague at this moment.
"In Mr. Jean's absence, Mr. Kevin Molina, assistant principal, has been designated as administrator of the school."
Students and parents trying to wrap their heads around the news.
"I am pretty surprised. I am still trying to digest what he just told me," said R.T. Melendez.
