TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) - A state appeals court will hear arguments next month in a dispute about a law approved last year that would require women to wait 24 hours before having abortions.
In a pair of rulings in late June and early July, Leon County circuit judges blocked the law from taking effect amid a constitutional challenge.
Under the law, signed in June by Gov. Rick Scott, abortion information would have to be provided in person to women at least 24 hours before the procedures are performed --- requiring them to make two trips to abortion clinics.
The American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights challenged the law, arguing in part that it would be an intrusion into private medical decisions. Supporters of the law have argued the waiting period would give women more time to reflect on whether to have abortions.
The 1st District Court of Appeal has scheduled scheduled arguments for February 9th.
