Another Stranded Whale Euthanized In Keys
MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – Officials at the Marine Mammal Conservancy have euthanized one of the five surviving pilot whales that were found stranded off Cudjoe Key last week.
Fourteen whales died after being stranded, while another two were released into the wild.
The euthanized whale had been having difficulty breathing and was not responding to treatment and was suffering according to officials at the Conservancy.
The whales had been moved to the Marine Mammal Conservancy in a temperature-controlled Publix Super Markets semi-trailer. They had been cared for by volunteers and veterinarians during the trip.
More than 500 volunteers have helped since the pilot whales were discovered May 5. The rehabilitation could take months and volunteers are still needed at the Conservancy to help nurse the whales back to health.
