Another Morning Of Record Breaking Cold
MIAMI (CBS4) - It was another chilly morning across South Florida as temperatures plunged into the mid-30s overnight into Wednesday morning.
CBS4 meteorologist Lissette Gonzalez said Wednesday morning's lows were actually cooler than Tuesday's because of a combination of clear skies and light to calm winds which allowed for radiational cooling. Monday night into Tuesday there was more cloud coverage which acted like a blanket at night to keep in the warmth. That was not the case Tuesday night into Wednesday because of clear skies.
The potential for freezing or near freezing temperatures for inland Broward and Miami-Dade led the National Weather service to issue a Freeze warning until 9am for the extreme western suburbs and agricultural regions where farmers remain on high alert closely monitoring the temperatures and wind speed. Fortunately, temperatures hovered just above the point where they could severely damage crops.
On Tuesday Ft. Lauderdale shattered a few records with a record low of 40 degrees in the morning which broke the old record of 42 set back in 1841. Daytime highs only reached 58 degrees which broke the old record low maximum temperature of 64 degrees which was set in 1997.
On Wednesday Ft. Lauderdale broke yet another record with a colder low of 39 degrees. The old record low of 43 degrees set back in 1959.
On Miami Beach, a temperature reading of 43 degrees Wednesday morning broke the old record low temp of 52 degrees set back in 1984.
On Tuesday Key West also tied its record cold maximum temperature of 62 degrees which was set back in 1937.
Gonzalez said Wednesday afternoon will not be as cold as Tuesday with highs in the mid-60s instead of the low 60s. Temperatures will gradually warm up late week as an area of high pressure which has been sending the cold Canadian arctic air our way moves towards the East. The winds will be shifting a bit more out of the Northeast and that onshore flow along with a shortwave moving in from the Gulf states could produce sprinkles Wednesday and a few passing showers and increasing clouds on Thursday.
As High Pressure continues to drift off to the East, our temperatures will become more moderate with Friday's highs forecast to be in the 70s. Our nights and mornings will still be cool through the weekend, but afternoon highs will rebound into the upper 70s by Saturday and then possibly the 80s by Sunday with a chance of spotty showers. But the warmer weather won't last long as another cold front moves through Sunday night into Monday and our temperatures will tumble once again to the 50s in the morning.
