American & U.S. Airways Merger Talks Underway
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Miami's largest air carrier, American Airlines, is moving one step closer to a potential mega-merger with U.S. Airways.
The companies have agreed to share confidential information between them as they weigh the possibility of a merger. It doesn't mean a merger is definite, but it's a major first step towards uniting the two companies.
If U.S. Airways and American did merge, it would rival two of the largest airlines, United Continental Holdings and Delta Air Lines.
U.S. Airways CEO Doug Parker has pushed for a merger with American since the parent company, AMR Corp, went into bankruptcy protection last November. American Airlines has said they are weighing several options for the future.
Both companies said they will not provide any further information on the possibility of a merger unless a merger is set to be announced.
