Missing Margate Girl Found Safe
MARGATE (CBS4) - A 12-year old Margate girl was found safe 18 hours after police said she was taken from her home by a 30 year old man from San Antonio, Texas who she met online.
Authorities cancelled the Amber Alert for Megan Williams around 6:15 pm Sunday evening.
Investigators said Williams was found safe and seemed to be okay when Walton County Sheriff's deputies pulled over the car that 30-year old Dana Broberg was driving on Interstate 10. Police said he was headed out of state.
"I just really want to thank everybody for bringing my daughter home safe," said an emotional Mellissa Ford, Megans mother.
Ford said she discovered some strange texts and emails in her daughter's phone a few days ago and confronted the girl about it.
"Who is this? Who are you talking to? How did you meet him? That conversation took place and I saved the emails just I case anything would have ever happened and thank goodness I did," she said.
Ford printed out the texts and email and that evidence helped to lead investigators to Broberg.
Broberg will be brought back to Broward County to face multiple charges including kidnapping and possible federal charges. Police said he did not have a criminal history.
For Ford, it was a painful lesson that could have had a much different ending. She hopes other parents can learn from this case and avoid the heartache.
"I would never had thought that my daughter was doing that," said Ford. "But if you see any unusual phone numbers or emails. The number one thing I can say that saved my daughters life is print out those emails, get those phone numbers, don't disregard it."
