Amazon Opens Second Florida Center
RUSKIN (CBSMiami/AP) - Amazon has opened its second regional fulfillment center in Florida.
The Seattle-based company said the new Ruskin center shipped its first item on September 24th, to a customer in New York; a Disney Frozen doll.
At the 1-million-square-foot Hillsborough County warehouse, employees will pick, pack and ship small items, such as books, DVDs and other consumer goods.
Amazon's first Florida fulfillment center opened August in Polk County. While the Ruskin facility handles small goods, the Lakeland center handles bigger items.
As part of a deal with Florida officials to bring a physical presence to the state, Amazon has been collecting Florida's 6 percent sales tax from residents since May.
