Alton Road Construction Project A Cause For Concern For West Ave Residents
MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) – Live, work or visit Miami Beach often? You may want to consider that—for the next 10 months or so—Alton Road will be partially closed.
Southbound Alton Road, from 8th Street to 17th Street, is shut down and traffic will be diverted to West Avenue, according to CBS4's news partner the Miami Herald. Two northbound lanes, however, will stay open.
The closure is part of the multi-million, $32 million to be exact, by the Florida Department of Transportation.
The project will provide a new drainage system for storm water drainage in area; construct sidewalk extensions; rebuild roadway, driveways, sidewalk and pedestrian ramps; replace traffic and pedestrian signals at intersections; install new signage and pavement markings; install new street lighting and install new landscaping and irrigation.
Residents along the West Avenue corridor, the paper reports, are worried about the effects of the road's detour through their neighborhood—a pedestrian-friendly with many bikers who seek an alternate route instead of the usually congested Alton Road.
"It's something really great, like a part of our personality," Christine Florez, president and founder of the West Avenue Corridor Neighborhood Association told the Miami Herald.
The Florida Department of Transportation said the project will be completed in August 2015 and workers will do what they can to minimize construction delays on the road.
