All Aboard: Metrorail Now Goes To Miami Int'l Airport
MIAMI (CBS4) - The Magic City's Metrorail now rolls into Miami International Airport.
"It's only going to create more connectivity and allow for people to get to and from (the airport) easily, more conveniently and cheaply," said Irene Ferradaz with Miami-Dade Transit.
The new super sophisticated Metrorail station opened for business Saturday and some passengers couldn't wait to board and ride.
"I think it's great you know especially when you come for short period of time," said Ariel Eskenazi who was visiting from Panama.
The train goes from Dadeland south to the airport in about 30 minutes shuttling through sixteen stops.
"Miami is going to rank up there with some the great cities because were interconnected and we finally got it done," said U.S. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.
Community leaders hope the new airport line will be an economic engine for tourism and business industries, shuttling air passengers to downtown hotels and the financial district.
"If you have no time to rent a car or wait for a bus, it's very convenient that you can just sit and go," said Sergil Putsoy.
It's projected 9000 riders will board the metrorail to and from the airport everyday.
Come 2013 there will be more transportation options; construction of a hub with Tri-rail, Amtrak and Greyhound is already underway. More than three quarters of the $506 million project was funded under the half penny sales tax.
