All Aboard Florida Unveils Fort Lauderdale Station Design
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- Plans for a high speed train from Miami to Orlando are chugging right along.
"I'm looking forward to hearing 'all aboard!' said Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler on Tuesday as All Aboard Florida unveiled the plans and design for its Fort Lauderdale train station.
It will be located on 4.8 acres of land along NW 2nd Avenue between Broward Boulevard and NW 4th Street, just west of the FEC tracks in downtown Fort Lauderdale.
It's right next to the central bus terminal for easy connections and will also link with Fort Lauderdale's planned "Wave Streetcar."
The train line connects Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Orlando.
"Imagine a day when tourists from South America who want to see Broward's beaches, can fly into Orlando, hop on a train after a few days of visiting the theme parks and get off at downtown Fort Lauderdale," said Broward Mayor Barbara Sharief.
The train will travel up to 70 miles per hour in South Florida and over a hundred miles an hour in rural parts of the state.
The All Aboard Florida passenger rail project will connect South and Central Florida utilizing 195 miles of an existing, active rail corridor. Forty new miles of rail line will be installed parallel to State Road 528 to connect to the Orlando International Airport.
The trip to Orlando from Miami should take about three hours. Phase one from Miami to West Palm should be up and running by late 2016.
All Aboard Florida will be the first privately owned, operated and maintained passenger rail system in the United States.
