Actor Christian Slater's Election Day Snafu In Miami
MIAMI (CBS4) - More than a month after November elections, the mess in Miami-Dade is still a sore spot for some voters including actor Christian Slater.
"The voting situation was very frustrating," the star of movies like "Heathers" and "Bed of Roses" told CBS4's Lauren Pastrana Saturday. "The fact that after standing in line for five, six hours, my vote not being counted is very frustrating."
In a letter from the Miami-Dade Supervisor of Elections Office dated 20 days after the election addressed to a "Christina" Slater, the actor was notified that the signature on his provisional ballot did not match the signature on his voter registration card.
Slater documented his voting experience on Twitter.
In one tweet about the wait, he promised to vote absentee next time. In another, he wrote, "Made it in the room only to find out the DMV didn't register me when I got my new license."
After waiting and re-registering, he finally tweeted, "I voted!"
But in the end his ballot didn't count.
The letter said, in part, "The Canvassing Board reviewed the information provided on the Voter's Certificate and Affirmation, any written evidence provided by you, and any evidence provided by the Supervisor of Elections in order to make the final determination."
Slater posted a copy of the letter on his Twitter page.
It went on to say, "After a thorough review, your provisional ballot was not counted because the signature on the provisional ballot certificate envelope did not match the signature on your voter registration record.
When asked about the fiasco, Slater said, "The votes are over. It's done. They kind of let me know it's too late to do anything about it."
The letter encouraged him to provide the Elections office with the necessary updates to his voter registration record.
Despite the snafu, Slater is happy with the results.
"I feel like everything worked out the way it was supposed to."
Slater said he's looking forward to voting in the next election.
