Accused British Drug Trafficking Teen Faces Judge
MIAMI (CBS4) - A British teen found carrying 30 pounds of cocaine stuffed in boxes of cake mix at Miami International Airport appeared before a bond court judge Friday morning.
Ayesha Niles, who turned 18 while in police custody, will need to post a bond of $505,000 if she is to be released from jail until the day of her trial. She is charged with trafficking cocaine.
She told a judge she did not have any money and a public defender was assigned to defend her.
Niles is accused of carrying the drugs which had an estimated street value of $650,000.
On October 21, federal customs agents selected her suitcase for "secondary screening." Inside her suitcase, authorities say they found approximately 30 pounds of powder cocaine in cake mix boxes.
Her arrest report states Niles was headed from Kingston, Jamaica, back home to London when she was stopped at the Miami International Airport
Niles told authorities she "did not question" the suspicious activity she was involved with. She confirmed that the 24 cake boxes were the same ones placed in her luggage in Jamaica.
Niles will be arraigned on November 7th.
