A-Rod Needs Another Hip Surgery
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez will require offseason surgery on his hip and will likely not be available for the team until mid-June.
According to Fox Sports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the surgery will be to A-Rod's left hip, not his surgically repaired right hip. The surgery is tentatively scheduled for January and typically requires a three to six month recovery time.
The news comes as Derek Jeter, the team's captain and starting shortstop, continues to recover from October ankle surgery. Jeter broke his ankle during the playoffs and was recently photographed in Miami in less than top shape.
For A-Rod, he may be nearing the end of his career in Major League Baseball. His numbers have declined recently bottoming out last year with a .272 average and 18 home runs in 122 games along with a slugging percentage of .430 and an OPS of .783.
A-Rod will be an albatross around the neck of the Yankees for a while to come. He's still owed $114 million over the next five seasons, including $28 million next year, according to NBCSports.com.
