90-Year Old Woman Attacked By Gator Released From Hospital
COPELAND (CBS4) - 90 year old Margaret Webb is home again, minus part of her leg but with an amazing story to tell, about how the missing leg ended up in an alligator's mouth. The gator met his maker, but Margaret is still here to tell her tale.
Florida wildlife officials said Margaret Webb was walking near her home in Copeland, a small community east of Ft. Myers, August 31st when an 8-foot alligator lunged out of a canal. The gator clamped onto Webb's leg and tried to drag her into the water.
Webb, however, was able to hang on long enough for a man driving by to stop and help her. That good Samaritan tried to shoot the alligator but it got away. The animal was later captured and euthanized.
Wildlife officials at the time said the leg was "barely attached" after the attack and had to amputated.
A spokesperson for Lee Count Memorial Hospital said Webb was sent home Wednesday, but could offer no more details about her condition.
Roughly five people are bitten each year in Florida by unprovoked alligators.
