Collier County, Florida woman, 80, found in neighbor's garage after being reported missing last week
NAPLES, Fla. -- The Collier County Sheriff's Office says it has found an elderly woman who was reported missing last week.
Deputies went door to door searching for Margaret Gallaway, 80, after she was last seen on Oct. 16. The woman suffers from Alzheimer's and is non-verbal, investigators said.
Collier County is in the western part of Florida and about a 2 hour and 30 minute drive from Miami-Dade.
Her disappearance led to a volunteer search effort in which over 100 people showed up to look for the woman, according to local officials.
During the search, deputies reviewed doorbell footage from Crown Point residents when they came across a video that captured a brief glimpse of a person entering a nearby open garage.
Deputies contacted the homeowner and obtained permission to enter the home and that is when they found the missing woman.
Authorities said the garage door was open on the day Galloway went missing but the homeowner later closed it. The homeowner was unaware that Gallaway was inside the garage.
The woman was taken to a hospital for evaluation and care.
Neighbors say CCSO Deputies told them Gallaway never entered the house and was stuck in the garage for six days without food or water.
