$7.6M Worth Of Marijuana Seized At Miami Seaport
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – More than $7.6 million worth of marijuana will not make it to the streets of South Florida or anywhere else for that matter after it was seized at the Miami Seaport.
The illegal contraband was discovered Friday, October 14th concealed in a container which had been selected for a routine inspection by U. S. Customs and Border Protection officers.
The bales of marijuana, nearly four tons worth, was discovered amid packages of magnetite near the doors of the container, according to CBP.
It was found on the vessel M/V Stadt Munchen which originated in Australia but its believed the marijuana was put into the container during a stop in Kingston, Jamaica.
There have been no arrests. The estimated street value of the bales is $7,674,000.
"This is an outstanding seizure, and it was accomplished through the hard work and perseverance on the part of the CBP officers who use all of our resources to search for and discover contraband in order to safeguard our country." stated Director of Field Operations Vernon Foret in a press release.
The recent seizure is one of the biggest for CBP in a while but not the largest on record. In previous years, CBP has seized in excess of 4,000 to 5,000 pound loads.
