6.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hits North Of Puerto Rico
MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit north of Puerto Rico Monday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Manuel Rivera of Noticel.com told CBS4's Brian Andrews that the quake was felt from San Juan to Ponce.
"I was in my bed and suddenly everything started to shake. The shaking lasted for more than 30 seconds," said Rivera.
Initially there were no reports of injury or damage; however, River says social media has lit up with posts about swaying buildings in San Juan's Condado district.
"We were told there is no tsunami warning so this was a great dress rehearsal for the next time a situation like this affects the island," said Rivera.
According to the agency, a destructive widespread tsunami threat does not exist based on historical earthquake and tsunami data. There is a small possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than a hundred kilometers from the earthquake epicenter.
