49ers QB Alex Smith Wraps Meeting With Dolphins
DAVIE (CBSMiami) - San Francisco 49ers free agent quarterback Alex Smith has wrapped up his meeting with the Miami Dolphins.
Smith arrived early Sunday morning at the team's Davie facilities and met with coach Joe Philbin for five and half hours.
The visit could affect the Peyton Manning sweepstakes, because the 49ers are among three finalists for Manning, along with the Denver Broncos and Tennessee Titans.
The 49ers had been working to re-sign Smith, the No. 1 overall 2005 draft pick who had his best season in 2011 under first-year 49ers coach Harbaugh, a former NFL quarterback. Smith and Manning have the same agent, Tom Condon.
Now a free agent, Smith started 66 games for San Francisco and led them to a NFC Championship last season.
If the Dolphins sign Smith, he'll be reunited with his former high school teammate, Reggie Bush.
On Saturday, the Dolphins met with Matt Flynn of the Green Bay Packers.
The Dolphins had hoped that having Joe Philbin, the only offensive coordinator Flynn's ever had in the NFL, as the team's new head coach would have given them a leg up. It didn't.
On Sunday, the former Green Bay Packers backup signed with the Seattle Seahawks.
