MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) - South Florida has new Florida Highway Patrol Chief.
Cynthia Williams began her new position Friday as Southern Region chief. She had been the acting chief for the past six months and previously commanded FHP's Troop D that operates in six central Florida counties.
"Over the last 29 years with the Patrol, Chief Williams has gained invaluable knowledge and experience that she will bring to her new position," said FHP Colonel Gene Spaulding. "Chief Williams is a remarkable leader and is the right person to lead the Southern Region as the Patrol moves forward."
Williams graduated from FHP's basic recruit class in 1986. She has worked in several FHP positions in Orlando, Lakeland and elsewhere and is a graduate of the FBI's National Academy. She was promoted to the rank of major in 2009.
Williams also has an associate's degree from Valencia College and attended the University of Central Florida.
