4 Injured As Car Hits Bus Stop
MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami.com) – Four people were injured Monday evening when a car hit a bus stop on Miami Beach and then fled the scene.
According to Detective Juan Sanchez of Miami Beach Police, a car drove up onto the sidewalk and hit 2 pedestrians walking on the sidewalk and then hit two other people who were sitting on the bus bench.
One of the victims was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital as a trauma alert, while the other 3 were taken to Mt. Sinai Medical Center. We're told one of the victims was in a wheelchair when he was struck by the hit-and-run driver.
Nobody knew who the driver was until that driver stopped at a North Bay Village gas station 2.5 miles away. Her car still had a sign from the bus stop piercing the door.
Police say the hit-and-run driver is 28-year-old Claudia Gallegos.
A woman who works at the gas station, who only wants to be identified as Meiling, says Gallegos came in screaming for help.
"She said, please, please call the police! Because I don't know what happened," said Meiling.
Gallegos stayed at the gas station until police came to question and arrest her.
"And she's very, very nervous. She's crying a lot. I don't know exactly what happened because she's so nervous," said Meiling.
Meiling says Gallegos told her a big truck had tried running her car off the road. Gallegos walked past CBS4 cameras and would not tell us what happened.
Police say Gallegos will be charged with four counts of leaving the scene of an accident with injuries.
