4 Dead In Post - Marlins Game Accident
MIAMI (CBS4) -- Four people are dead after a mini-van plowed through pedestrians walking on a sidewalk just after the Marlins game had ended in Little Havana Saturday night.
Police said a man in his 60's might have suffered a medical condition and when he veered off of the road in the 1700 block of NW 7th Street and ran over three children and a grandmother.
"I was sick to my stomach," said Ivislissette Campos, a neighbor who witnessed the aftermath. "I was like I don't care if I ever have seen them it still hurts me so much because it's a human being especially if it's a child."
Investigators said the driver of the red mini van died and so did the grandmother, a 14 year old boy and thirteen year old girl. A ten year old girl survived with multiple injuries. The family was visiting from Georgia and had just left the Marlins game when they were hit.
Leonel Lazo said the minivan narrowly missed him too.
"I jumped out the way, recalled Lazo. "I jumped out the way and I was telling the police officer tomorrow is my birthday. I got lucky I guess."
A man who was with the grandmother and children also was not hit by the mini-van. But medics rushed him to the hospital after they said he was overcome by emotion.
"The father was hysterical when all he would scream was my son, my son, and they took his son right away and I guess the other two people were left on the sidewalk," said Campos.
The scene left behind told the story of the tragic crash. The Mini van was crashed into a wall and its path of destruction was evident by the pieces of mangled metal from fencing and concrete thrown about.
