4.6-Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Southern Haiti
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – An earthquake, described as moderate, rattled southern Haiti Wednesday night.
There were no immediate reports of damage but the quake caused some people to run out of buildings in fear.
The United States Geological Survey reports the magnitude 4.6-quake was centered 24 miles southeast of the capital of Port-au-Prince and had a depth of 3 miles. It struck at 9:51 p.m.
Some residents of capital ran into the streets in fear, remembering the January 12, 2010 massive earthquake that devastated the capital and surrounding area. That 7-magnitude quake killed more than 300,000 people and toppled thousands of crudely built homes.
More than $2 billion has been spent on recovery efforts, though Haitians have seen little rebuilding as reconstruction projects have gotten snagged in Haiti's political disputes. Roughly a half-million Haitians are still homeless and live in densely crowded tent camps. A cholera epidemic that began after the earthquake has killed an additional 7,000 Haitians and sickened another 515,000.
There were no immediate reports of death or serious damages from Wednesday's quake.
