3 Hurt After Police Car, SUVs Collide In Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) – Three people including a Ft. Lauderdale police officer were taken to a hospital for minor injuries after a serious three vehicle collision involving the officer's cruiser.

The accident took place at the intersection of Andrews Avenue and NE 1st Street just blocks from City Hall.

Police spokesman Travis Mandell said the officer, who was responding as back up to another officer on a violent domestic dispute call, was heading north on Andrews Avenue and hit an SUV heading east on NE 1st Street.  Mandell pointed out that there stop signs at the intersection running east and west on NE 1st Street, but no stop signs in the north and south bound lanes of Andrews Avenue.

The impact caused the SUV to roll over.  It then hit another SUV which had stopped in the westbound lane of NE 1st Street.

According to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue spokesman Matt Little, someone in the rolled over SUV had to be extricated from the severely damaged vehicle.

Mandell said the officer and two other people were taken to Broward General Medical Center where they were treated for minor injuries.
