3 Accused In Teen Burning Case To Get Separate Trials
LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami)-The three teenagers accused of setting Michael Brewer on fire will each have separate trials.
All of the parties involved agreed Thursday morning to holding three individual trials for Matthew Bent, Denver Jarvis and Jesus Mendez.
The three Deerfield Beach teens are accused of pouring rubbing alcohol on then 15-year-old Brewer back on October 2009 before setting him on fire. The trio reportedly set Brewer on fire after an argument over a video game and a stolen bike.
He survived by jumping into a nearby swimming pool. He suffered burns over 60-percent of his body. He spent months rehabilitating at Jackson memorial Hospital Burn Center in Miami.
All three teens face second-degree attempted murder charges and up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
On March 28, 2011 the city of Lauderhill has proclaimed April 9 "Michael Brewer Day." Brewer was in attendance. Read more here.
