$250,000 Chain Found Off Florida Keys
KEY WEST (CBS4) - A 40-inch gold chain from the 17th century was found and retrieved from the sea floor off the Florida Keys. Diver Bill Burt was actually searching for a Spanish galleon off the Florida Keys.
According to Andy Newman of the Florida Keys News Bureau, the necklace has an enameled gold cross and two-sided engraved medallion. The chain has been valued at approximately $250,000.
"Bill comes up with this beautiful gold artifact," said Andy Matroci, captain of the Fisher search vessel J.B. Magruder. "It has a cross on it with black enamel and a gold medallion, and lots of lettering on the medallion and the cross."
The gold medallion is believed to be from the Nuestra Senora de Atocha that sank during a 1622 hurricane.
