2 Years Later, A Lot Of News, Still No NCAA Ruling On UM
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – For Miami Hurricanes fans, the wait for the NCAA Committee on Infractions to hand down sanctions for the Nevin Shapiro scandal has to seem like they're living the plot of the movie "Groundhog Day."
Will today be the day? Are the sanctions out today? What happened with the NCAA and UM today?
The bungled NCAA investigation, hearing, and now the wait for UM to finally receive its punishment, have gone on for over two years. As fans, the school, and players await the NCAA to finally reveal the charges have taken so long that quite a bit has happened since the first report came out.
It was August 16, 2011 that a little known UM booster, and convicted and jailed Ponzi schemer, Nevin Shapiro became the biggest thorn in the side of UM since Dennis Erickson was walking the sidelines at UM.
On that August day more than two years ago, Shapiro spelled out claims of illegal payments and a slew of other alleged infractions of NCAA rules against the Hurricanes. Since then, the NCAA has been investigating the school, bungling said investigation, and going before the Committee on Infractions.
Here's a look at some of the things that have happened since the first report from Yahoo! Sports spelled out the alleged improprieties at UM.
- The Miami Heat have won back-to-back NBA Championships (June 2012 and June 2013)
- The Miami Dolphins have gone through three head coaches (Tony Sparano, Todd Bowles, Joe Philbin)
- Reggie Bush played his entire career for the Miami Dolphins (the NCAA loves Reggie so much)
- The world didn't end on 12/21/12
- The Royal Baby was conceived and born
- Two Congresses have served in Washington, DC
- Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria actually spent money on the roster, then sold it all off
- The Marlins still aren't winning (no winning seasons in that time span)
- Trayvon Martin was shot, George Zimmerman was arrested and acquitted
- The U.S. Senate passed a budget (first time in four years)
- President Barack Obama won re-election
- Detroit Filed for Bankruptcy
- Casey Anthony was acquitted
- The Miami Cannibal hit the news
- The NBA solved it's lockout
- The NHL ended it's lockout
- The Miami Hurricanes have played two seasons and are two weeks from the start of a third
Those are just a few of the things that have happened in the interim between the first report from Yahoo! Sports' Charles Robinson and Monday, and the NCAA still hasn't released its report.
The NCAA Committee on Infractions has given no indication when it might release its report and sanctions, if there are any, against the University of Miami. Monday marked almost eight weeks since the school went before the COI to plead its case.
The NCAA will give 24 hours notice before it releases the public report and sanctions.
