2 Sentenced To Life In Dadeland Mall Shooting
MIAMI (CBS4) - Two men who were charged in the shooting and robbery of an armored truck guard at Dadeland Mall in Kendall have been sentenced to life in prison.
A federal judge handed down the sentence Tuesday to 25-year-old Emmanuel Maxime guilty Friday of conspiracy, robbery and using a firearm in connection with the robbery and 26-year-old Dwight Carter who was found guilty of using a firearm in connection with the robbery as well as drug trafficking and causing the death.
The robbery happened on Dec. 1, 2008. Dunbar security guard Carlos Alvarado, 51, was carrying a money bag into The Limited store at the suburban mall when the two armed men approached him.
During the robbery, prosecutors said Carter unleashed a spray of bullets, four of which struck and killed Alvarado. Investigators say Carter then grabbed the money bags, which contained over $63,000 in cash and checks.
Miami-Dade Police Department Director James K. Loftus expressed his sympathy to the victim's family.
"We embrace the responsibility of speaking for our victims. We hope and pray this verdict brings comfort to the Alvarado family," Loftus said in a written statement.
Two others involved in the case were sentenced earlier this year. Erskaneshia Ritchie was sentenced to nearly 25 years in prison on charges of conspiracy to affect commerce by robbery through violence. Nikkia Thomas received a sentence of 19 ½ years.
Ritchie and Thomas acted as lookouts during the robbery.
