Police Chase Ends In Pinecrest, 2 Taken Into Custody
PINECREST (CBS4) – Two men are in police custody after leading them on a short high-speed chase on the Palmetto Expressway which ended in a congested Pinecrest intersection.
According to Miami-Dade police, one of their undercover officers was trying to conduct a traffic stop on the driver of a 1997 white Saturn when the driver took off. At Sunset Drive another undercover officer tried to cut off the Saturn by pulling in front of it. Not to be deterred, police said the driver of the Saturn sped up and rammed the second undercover officer's car. At that point the chase was on with police officers from all over the area converging on the driver of the Saturn as sped along the Palmetto Expressway. Weaving in and out of traffic and even speeding along the shoulder of the road at times, the driver tried his best to out run police.
Tom Fragapane said he was sitting in the Keg South when he saw the chase on television.
"The interrupted and said look we are in a high speed pursuit, this is what's going on," said Fragapane.
At the point where the Palmetto merges into the southbound lanes of U.S.1 in Pinecrest, the always congested 104th Street intersection became a trouble spot for the suspects and cops quickly blocked the Saturn in its tracks.
"I figured after they passed Kendall Drive there would be no where else for them to go, so I came out here and sure enough they boxed him in right here," said Fragapane.
Moving quickly, police were able to take both people inside the care into custody quickly.
"One door was open," said Fragapane. "They yanked the one kid out, threw him on the floor. Then the cops went to the other door, pulled it open and yanked him out."
Police said as it turned out the driver of the car has a warrant out for his arrest.
