School Of Square Grouper Wash Ashore Broward Beach
LAUDERDALE BY THE SEA (CBSMiami) – It wasn't a whale or a manatee that washed ashore a Broward beach Friday morning but a handful of square groupers and soon after, one person was arrested.
A total of four bricks of marijuana, also known as square groupers, came ashore just north of the fishing pier at 2 Commercial Boulevard in Lauderdale by the Sea.
According to the police complaint affidavit, a witness spotted Reginaldo Azevedo on the beach as he picked up one of the bricks near the pier and started to walk away.
When an officer told Azevedo to "stop", he simply took off running, said police.
Then, according to the report, the officer saw Azevedo throw the brick into some sand dunes near 1850 S. Ocean Boulevard.
According to BSO spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion, each brick weighed about 15 pounds each and the estimated street value of the pot is between $50,000 -$75,000.
Azevedo was taken into custody and charged with possession of cannabis and tampering with physical evidence.
