MIAMI — A community is heartbroken after a 13-year-old boy was killed and another child was hospitalized following a shooting in Florida City on Saturday night.

Around 8 p.m., Florida City Police were called out to the shooting near 1329 NW 6th Ave., where they found the young teen – Johvan Taylor – suffering from apparent gunshot wounds in a backyard along with another child who was shot, Miami-Dade Police said.

Officers immediately began life-saving efforts until Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived and airlifted Taylor to Jackson South Trauma, where he died, police said. Miami-Dade Police said the other child took themselves to an area hospital, where they are in stable condition.

At this time, police have not identified the second child injured in the shooting.

According to the preliminary investigation, a group of juveniles were outside the home when the suspect or suspects approached them and shot into the group. They then fled in an unknown direction by unknown means, Miami-Dade Police said.

Taylor's aunt told CBS News Miami that he loved playing football, dirt bikes and his little brother, and was also a big foodie. His community is holding a vigil to honor him on Sunday evening.

Miami-Dade Police's Homicide Bureau is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. If anyone has any information regarding the shooting, contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip at CrimeStoppers305.com.
