13-Year-Old Recovering After Getting Grazed By Bullet
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Jawan Douglas, 13, continues to recover Friday after being grazed in the head by a bullet while walking home.
The boy's mother, Mayzel Douglas, told CBS4 that her son is doing better after surgery.
"They operated on him and removed a bullet from his head," she said. "And he is doing much better. I think he's going to be ok. This is a relief. He should be here at Jackson Memorial Hospital for 3 or 4 days."
Family members said they were stunned that something like this could happen to a kid.
"It's sad how something like this could happen to an innocent kid," said the victim's brother, Johnny Douglas. "I didn't think that of all people it would happen to my brother."
Miami-Dade Police say the boy and another teenager were walking along NW 81st Street near 12th Avenue Thursday evening when a car pulled alongside them and opened fire. The shooters fired multiple shots, striking one of the teens.
The boy's head was grazed by a bullet.
"A newer silver or gray in color Nissan Altima rolled up beside them rolled down the window and fired several shots at the victim," explained Detective Robin Pinkard, with Miami-Dade Police.
"I heard 'pop, pop, pop' that was it," said Shawn Wayne, who lives in the neighborhood.
The 13-year- old victim was taken to the hospital. His friend was not hurt.
"I think it's ridiculous how these people are shooting innocent youth and the youth are caught in the middle of it," Johnny said.
Police say the car, thought to be a silver or gray Nissan Altima, then left the area.
Investigators are looking for the car, the shooter, and the reason behind the shooting.
"Detectives are talking to witnesses to see if this was a targeted incident," said Pinkard.
Johnny also asked for help solving the crime saying his mother was taking the shooting very hard.
"She almost lost her son," Johnny Douglas said.
