The portion of the New River impacted by the train derailment is part of a national park, and is believed to be older than the Appalachians.
Nearby residents were asked to shelter in place. The railway company said that there were no hazardous materials aboard the train.
The train cars that went off the rails earlier this month in East Palestine, Ohio, were carrying several hazardous materials known to have potentially damaging health effects.
A total of 207 passengers and 14 crewmembers were on board the train at the time. CNN reports at least 50 people were injured.

The derailment occurred at the LATC yard, the same location where reports of vandalism and theft have made headlines over recent days.
The derailment happened just before 4 p.m. Wednesday and left more than 25 rail cars scattered haphazardly on the tracks east of Ludlow, and north of National Trails Highway.
