YouTube Videos Show Drivers Pulling Dangerous 'Sideshow' Stunts On LA Streets
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — About 50 people were arrested last month in connection with illegal street racing and stunt-driving events in Los Angeles called "sideshows."
YouTube videos show the dangerous events on public streets, sidewalks and even freeways.
In one recently posted video, a driver can be seen doing doughnuts near the intersection of Western and Imperial while onlookers gather around.
"It's normal now," said Jackie Bernabe, who works near the site of a frequent sideshow. "We see it like every week. Every other day. They wait for traffic to stop and then they just do it."
The events have drawn increased attention from authorities lately.
In January, the Los Angeles Police Department issued a warning saying they would be cracking down on the events.
Last month, the LAPD, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and California Highway Patrol arrested about 50 people in connection with the events over the course of three weekends.
Authorities said dozens of cars were also impounded. Investigators say it's not just the drivers who face penalties; spectators can also face charges.
