Kelvin "Sarge" McFarland, 40, of Monrovia is accused for handcuffing a teen who was truant, taking him to a family member's home and demanding an unknown amount of money for his services before releasing him.
Authorities said McFarland also tried to persuade the family to enroll the 14-year-old in his boot camp, "Family 1st Growth Camp."
McFarland is being held on a $285,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 13.
Pasadena police think there may be other victims whom he tried to solicit money from. Anyone wanting to report a similar crime should contact the Pasadena Police Department at (626) 744-4241.
