Youngest Gasol Brother Adria Will Walk-On At UCLA
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) - You could soon be seeing another Gasol play basketball in Los Angeles this fall, and it's not Marc.
Adria Gasol, the youngest brother of the Spanish big men, plans to walk-on at UCLA after enrolling as a student for the fall.
UCLA spokesperson said he will not join the team, along with freshman phenom Shabazz Muhammad, to their three preseason games in China.
Adria does not have the experience that their older brothers had when they were 18, but Ben Howland believes the rich basketball blood-line of the Gasol's is good enough for him to have him as a walk-on.
Adria,18, worked out with the Spanish U-18 last summer, but did not impress the coaches enough to make the roster.
"(Adria) looks like a typical late-developing kid — long, skinny, fast but lost on the court," said Rafal Juc, a Poland-based scout for EuroHopes.com.
"Adria was on radar of a couple of Spanish agents and scouts, but they don't see him in the future on as high a level as his brothers play. His basketball IQ is limited, he shows some serious lack of basketball fundamentals and struggles due to many injuries. But in my opinion it's smart move by UCLA (to add him). It doesn't cost anything to get the kid a place (on the) basketball team when he pays for his academics, especially when his last name is Gasol."
The 6-foot-10 teenager was living with his brother Marc in Memphis and played ball during his freshman and sophomore years at Lausanne High School.
