Wounded Teen Released From Hospital After Witnessing Father's Murder In South LA
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A teenage boy who witnessed the fatal shooting of his father over the weekend was out of the hospital Monday, the Los Angeles Police Department said.
Authorities said 41-year-old Rene Balbuena was shot and killed in South Los Angeles Saturday evening during an attempted robbery. His unidentified 15-year-old son suffered a graze wound in the incident.
Police believe two black male suspects in their 20s placed an ad on Craig's List for a cellphone to lure and ambush Balbuena in the area of 92nd Street and Gramercy Place.
"The suspects began demanding that the victims hand over their money. Balbuena exited the vehicle and one of the suspects began shooting," Det. Dean Vinluan said.
The two men fled the scene on foot, running southbound on Gramercy Place.
Balbuena, who was shot multiple times in the torso, was taken to California Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Authorities Monday were looking for surveillance video of the crime.
Anyone with information regarding the shooting should contact the Criminal Gang/Homicide Division, Detective Dean Vinluan or Lolita Deavila at (213)485-1383.
