'World On Wheels' In Mid-City Closing Its Doors After 3 Decades
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The last indoor roller skating rink in central Los Angeles is closing after entertaining customers for the past three decades.
The Los Angeles Times reports that a bankruptcy proceeding, a change in ownership and changing neighborhood tastes contributed to the demise of World on Wheels, which opened on Halloween 1981. The rink is slated to close Sunday.
The facility attracted a legion of skaters, both young and old, by bringing in entertainers. The pioneering hip-hop duo, LA Dream Team, performed there in the 1980s. The Scooby Brothers, a trio who skated in the 1979 film "Roller Boogie," was a mainstay.
Skaters will now be forced to travel to other places around Southern California such as Cerritos, Chino and Glendale, to lace up.
