Woman Shot, Killed At North Long Beach Motel, Police Say
NORTH LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) – A manhunt was underway for a gunman who shot and killed a woman Friday morning at a motel in North Long Beach, police said.
The shooting was reported at approximately 9:50 a.m. at a motel located at Long Beach Boulevard and Cambridge Street. The victim was taken to a hospital, where she died, according Long Beach police spokeswoman Nancy Pratt.
Police did not release her name, although the victim's sister identified her to KCAL9 as 29-year-old Lanette Washington, a mother of six.
"She was a great lady and mom," said Washington's sister, Chelly Johnson.
According to police, following the shooting the suspect ran into an adjacent neighborhood, prompting them to issue an advisory warning the public to avoid the area around the 710 Freeway and Long Beach Boulevard, as well as Gordon and Barclay streets. Residents were either evacuated or told to stay in their homes until further notice.
SWAT teams canvassed the neighborhood. One woman told KCAL9 that she was informed by officers that the suspect ran through several backyards.
Just after 7 p.m., Long Beach police reported that the search in the neighborhood had concluded, but the suspect remained at large. Residents were allowed to return to their homes.
The circumstances of the shooting and a description of the suspect were not immediately confirmed. There was no word on a motive for killing.
