Woman Killed When Her Boyfriend Accidentally Shoots Cannon Into Their Home

POTRERO (CBS) — A woman was killed early Tuesday when her lover, who had allegedly been drinking, accidentally shot a homemade cannon into the couple's home.

Homicide detectives with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department are investigating the 38-year-old woman's death, which took place in the 25000 block of Potrero Valley Road, near the California-Mexico border.

Authorities say she was found dead at 12:15 a.m. after a cannonball slammed into a residence at the Twin Lakes Resort mobile home park.

It appears the accident happened after Richard Fox, 39, reportedly filled the cannon with powder from fireworks.

"They had a large-sized hole in the side of the trailer," Mike Moller of Cal Fire told KNX 1070's Tom Reopelle.

The woman's 4-year-old daughter and three other adults were inside the trailer when the cannon sent shrapnel into the home. No one else was hurt.

Fox was treated for shrapnel injuries before he was arrested for allegedly causing a deadly explosion.
