Woman Gives Birth To Baby Girl On 405 Freeway In West LA

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A baby girl was delivered on the 405 Freeway in West Los Angeles, authorities said Saturday.

The bundle of joy was born just after 1 a.m. in the backseat of a sport utility vehicle on the closed Santa Monica Boulevard off-ramp.

"We got the call and they told us that the people were on the side of the freeway in the car," LAFD Station No. 59 Firefighter Tisa Murphy said. "We got there and the baby was born already in the backseat."

"She was nice and alert and healthy," Murphy told CBS2's Joy Benedict. "What we did is just cut the cord and wrapped the baby up, kept the baby warm and transported it to the hospital."

Murphy, who has been a firefighter for some time, said the department typically receives calls of women going into labor but make it to the hospital in time.

"It happens once in a while this way and actually it's very rewarding. You know, it's something that I love to do and I love being a service to the community and it's very rewarding," she said.

Murphy said mom and baby are both doing great, adding that the couple did a good job at pulling over.

"I got to hold the baby and just see her little face. It was awesome. It was really awesome," Murphy said.
