Woman Claims She Ended Up In ICU After Procedure At Clinic She Says Doctor Co-Owned

TORRANCE (CBSLA.com) — A San Pedro couple says they never had time to grieve the recent miscarriage of their daughter because of the events that transpired after.

Back in March, Torrance Memorial Medical Center nurse Liza Domingo needed to have her 19-week-old fetus removed and says she was referred to a doctor at the hospital for the procedure.

But the couple claims the doctor, Steven Rosenberg, told them her insurance would not cover the procedure if performed at Torrance Memorial.

Instead, the Domingos say, the doctor recommended Liza have the procedure done at the Pacific Coast Surgical Center (PCSC).

"He made it sound like it was a lot cheaper, almost half the price of the hospital, even though I preferred the hospital. I trusted him that it was a reliable place," Liza Domingo told CBS2's Rachel Kim.

After the procedure, when she was about to go home, Domingo says she began to bleed profusely and needed another procedure.

She was eventually taken to Torrance Memorial where she spent days in the intensive care unit.

Her husband Darrin said: "It's outrageous because Liza deserved better care."

When the bills started to arrive, the Domingos said they found out Rosenberg co-owned PCSC.

The couple also alleges that they later found out that Liza's health insurance would have covered the procedure at Torrance Memorial.

"I felt betrayed, I felt like the doctor lied to me," Domingo said.

On Thursday night, the Domingos' attorney says they've filed a lawsuit against the surgical center and Rosenberg, alleging negligence and fraud, among other claims.

"We're gonna show that this has been going on for years at this particular clinic and they have diverted many patients over there by telling them lies so that they could reap the benefits and the profits," said David Ring, the couple's attorney.

Nabil Salem, an attorney for PCSC, sent CBS2 a statement that stated: "After an initial review of the complaint, PCSC is confident that it has not committed any legal or ethical violation, and asserts that the allegations made against PCSC are without merit."

CBS2 reached out to Rosenberg directly for comment but has not yet heard back from him.

Torrance Memorial, which has not been named in the lawsuit, said the hospital has no jurisdiction over PCSC.
