Woman, 24, Killed In Indy Car Race In Fontana
FONTANA (AP) — A Los Angeles woman has been killed while driving in a simulated Indy car race in San Bernardino County.
Ashley Sara Phalen's vehicle struck the inside wall and overturned at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana Friday, City News Service reported.
Phalen was participating in the Mario Andretti Racing Experience Driving 101 class that teaches the public the basics of open wheel racing by allowing them to drive replica Indy cars.
Authorities did not say how fast Phalen was driving when she crashed, but said cars often reach speeds of up to 120 miles an hour on the two-mile course.
Racing at the track was suspended Friday, but resumed Saturday.
