Winning $400M Powerball Ticket Sold -- In South Carolina
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Two Californians came mighty close.
But the winning $400 million Powerball ticket in Wednesday's draw was sold in South Carolina.
The winner must decide if they want a lump sum payout of $223.6 million or take the $400 million parceled out over 29 years.
The winning numbers are 7, 10, 22, 32, 35 and the Powerball number is 19.
Two Californians have 5/5 tickets matching every number but the Powerball.
Those tickets are worth $873,083 each. One was sold in Riverside at the Circle K at 6908 Indiana Ave. and the other at an Arco at 9600 S. Avalon Boulevard in Los Angeles.
The $400 million jackpot was the fourth largest in the 21-year history of the Powerball game, and the fifth for any U.S. lottery.
Nationally, there were seven other tickets sold with five numbers, but missing the Powerball -- two each in Georgia and New York and one each in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and South Carolina. They are each worth $1 million.
Why are the California winners paid less than a million? California law requires major payoffs of lottery games to be paid on a pari-mutuel basis.
Powerball is played in 43 states, Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Powerball starts at $40 million. The record jackpot reached $590 million in May 2013.
