Wife, Child Convince Suspect In Fatal Covina Hit-And-Run To Surrender
COVINA (CBSLA.com) — A man suspected in a fatal hit-and-run crash in Covina has turned himself in to authorities, police said Monday.
Police were dispatched to the 1100 block of West San Bernardino Road a little after 7:30 p.m. Sunday found the two victims on the street. A woman was rushed to an area hospital, where she later died from her injuries, while her 10-year-old daughter – who she had been walking with across the street – suffered moderate injuries.
Witnesses told police that a brown Nissan Altima driving west had struck the woman and her child and continued on down San Bernardino Road, failing to stop to render aid.
Police say Jose Higareda, the motorist in the brown Nissan Altima, later turned himself in at the Covina Police Department, at the urging of his wife and child, who were passengers in his car.
Higareda, a resident of Irwindale, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run with injuries and was being held at the Covina Police Department on $50,000 bail. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance Tuesday.
Anyone who saw the crash can call the Covina Police Department's Traffic Division at (626) 384-5675.
